Vegetable recall involves nearly 100 products

The markets traded mixed during the midday with the Dow rising 14 points to 23,342. Nasdaq lost 10 points to 6,618.


A potential listeria contamination of various vegetables has prompted recalls in the United States and Canada. Mann Packing voluntarily recalled nearly 100 products after one positive test result during a random sampling. Retailers such as Albertsons, Safeway, Trader Joe's, Vons, Walmart and Whole Foods have all recalled prepackaged salads, vegetable trays, and stir fry mixes with expiration dates between October 11 through October 20.


The European Commission has expanded its investigation of price fixing among German automakers to include Daimler and Volkswagen. The offices of both companies were searched recently. The carmakers have been accused of working together for decades to set the prices of vehicle equipment and technology related to emissions controls.


A U.S. district judge has ordered a new trial in Apple's patent suit against Samsung Electronics. Samsung had been ordered to pay $399 million to Apple for copying the iPhone look for its devices. But, the Supreme Court ruled that damages must be based on specific patents that have been infringed rather than the entire device.


In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of nearly 3 to 2 on both the NYSE and on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 eased a point to 2,573. Bitcoin tumbled $57 to $5,842.
