National 2016 Fatal Crash Data Shows Marijuana Involvement at 18%. Drug at 40%, and DUI at 27%

Only 40% of the drivers had known test results for DUI, and only 31% for drugs. Both DUI and Drug tests were down 16% in the last year. The % of DUI drivers is down 10% in 5 years, but with testing down 24%, there is doubt on the positive results.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, November 21, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "Lack of mandatory drug & DUI testing is a serious problem and is masking the true extent of DUI, drugs, & marijuana in fatal crashes." Says Al Crancer, lead researcher of the report.

For drivers tested in the last 5 years, Drug involvement is up 173%, and Marijuana is up 95%.

"The large increase of marijuana found in fatal crashes, from 9.3% in 2011 to 18.2% in 2016, shows an awful trend that suggests that soon the marijuana fatal crash percentage will be higher than alcohol, if it is not already in some states." - says coauthor Phillip Drum, Pharm D.

Also in 2016, DUI and Drug fatal crash drivers were younger than drivers with no DUI or Drugs. Marijuana drivers were 15 years younger and had the largest percent of drivers under age 21. Drivers with DUI & Drug were more involved in speeding and less were restrained than drivers with no DUI or Drugs. Largest fatal crash period for drivers with no DUI or Drugs was 4-8pm, with DUI highest at Mid-4am. Marijuana was highest 8pm-Midnight. DUI and Drug fatal crashes were highest on weekends. DUI and Drug drivers avoid the principal arteries and are more likely to be on local roads.
