It's Happening: Substratum Network Announces Plan to Open-Source Its Software in Next Release

In recognition of World Day Against Cyber-Censorship, Substratum Network announces move to open-source software

COLUMBUS, OH, March 13, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Substratum Network (www.Substratum.net) is pleased to announce it will open-source its software in the next release to further its fight against cyber-censorship. Built as a foundation for the decentralized web, Substratum's mission is to ensure that all people have free and equal access to information, without impediment.

"Open-sourcing Substratum technology allows us to activate a community of engineers who also believe fighting censorship is a top priority and want to commit their time and craft to helping us develop a solution," says B.J. Allmon, COO of Substratum Services. "Yesterday's World Day Against Cyber-Censorship is a reminder that too many voices are being silenced or deterred by governments that restrict or control the flow of information online. Substratum is being specifically developed to combat censorship around world."

Substratum will fight censorship by providing a decentralized network for freedom across international barriers. By leveraging the power of the individual, anyone can participate or browse the internet. Substratum will put the power back into the hands of the people with what they want and don't want to view.

This year, World Day Against Cyber-Censorship took on additional meaning with the elimination of net neutrality protections in the United States on April 23rd. Not only does the loss of net neutrality pose a threat to innovation in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space, many feel ISP's could use their power to limit accessibility (due to vested interest), particularly in areas where ISP monopolies exist.

"Today, just a few large platforms drive most traffic to online news sources in the U.S., and thus have enormous influence over what sources of information the public consumes on a daily basis," says Justin Tabb, CEO of Substratum Network. "The loss of net neutrality potentially gives corporations and ISP's even more power over the distribution of information. Problems ranging from censorship at the behest of national governments to more subtle, perhaps even unintentional, bias in the curation of content users see based on opaque, unaudited curation algorithms could easily arise."

Substratum will provide the tools to keep the internet accessible through decentralization. By open-sourcing the software, Substratum will be able to collaborate with developers around the world to further develop the network with free, unrestricted, and uncensored access to content on the web. Watch for more open-sourcing details in the next month.
