Students Benefit from Integrated Leader-in-Me Program

Oneonta School students proudly take part in the Leader in Me program, which forms the basis for the positive spirit and culture on the campus. Oneonta instills leadership habits based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in a student’s day-to-day experience.

The program was founded after Principal Marla Fernandez applied for a generous three-year grant from the Panda Restaurant Group. With additional support from Leader.org, Oneonta received the services of a consultant and coach, along with support for implementation of the program. Initial steps included teacher training to ensure that students were provided with the best resources and guidance throughout the program. Each teacher set goals for the classroom during a four-day professional development consultation.

Specifically, teachers have embedded an integrated leadership experience into the lives of students at Oneonta: being proactive, thinking win-win, starting with the end in mind, seeking first to understand then to be understood, and synergizing. The use of leadership-focused language both at home and in school have empowered students to take on leadership roles including presenting at school assemblies, recruiting parents for school surveys, and taking part in Board meetings.

Teachers at Oneonta are most proud of the moments in which students express their excitement about the ability to lead. A student who was known to be shy expressed his happiness, “If I could do that, then I could do anything!”
