Citizens Against Government Waste Names Sen. Elizabeth Warren March 2018 Porker of the Month

Today, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) named Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) its March 2018 Porker of the Month for spreading false prophesies about the wildly successful tax reform law.

On November 14, 2017, prior to the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, Sen. Elizabeth Warren cut a kitschy YouTube video with then-Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) where she proclaimed that, “We have this big problem in the country.” She went on to mock what companies would do with their share of the tax cuts, saying, “Somehow, [companies] are going to share it with all of their workers, and that’s how worker wages are going to come up. Now the problem we’ve got for that is it’s never worked that way. It hasn’t worked that way.”

Her comments did not age well. Just minutes after Congress passed the tax law on December 20, 2017, Sen. Warren was proved wrong. Companies began announcing that they were giving $1,000 bonuses to all of their employees. Other companies raised their minimum wage to $15 per hour, while others beefed up benefit packages and retirement plans. More than 400 companies and four million American workers have seen and felt direct benefits from the tax law.

All of this came as a shock to Sen. Warren, who attempted to backtrack on her gloomy prediction on Boston Public Radio on January 5, 2018, saying, “I am glad when I read that there are companies that are giving out thousand-dollar bonuses. There are companies that say they’re going to rework some of their benefit plans. I’m in favor of all of that.”

CAGW President Tom Schatz said, “Sen. Warren’s doom and gloom predictions clearly illustrate her deeply flawed economic dogma. Not surprisingly, giving Americans more of their own money is already resulting in positive benefits, and the best is yet to come. The tax law has laid the groundwork for substantial job and wage growth for American workers. Tax reform is working, and even Sen. Warren was forced to eat crow.”

For her blatantly false predictions about the successful tax reform law, CAGW names Sen. Elizabeth Warren its March 2018 Porker of the Month.

Citizens Against Government Waste is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government. Porker of the Month is a dubious honor given to lawmakers, government officials, and political candidates who have shown a blatant disregard for the interests of taxpayers.
