Alfa Chemistry Announced to Provide 3D Printing Materials for Research and Development

On March 10, 2018, Alfa Chemistry announced to provide a wide range of 3D printing materials for research and development, including engineering plastics, photosensitive resin, rubber materials, photosensitive materials, ceramic materials and metallic material to satisfy the increasing demands from the customers.

3D printing refers to processes in which material is joined or solidified by computer control to create a three-dimensional object. The three-dimensional object can be of almost any shape. In 3D printing process, additive 3D Printing materials, such as liquid molecules or powder grains are being added together. 3D printing is usually used in rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing. There are many different technologies used in 3D printing, like stereolithography (STL) or fused deposit modeling (FDM), and selective laser sintering (SLS). Unlike conventional machining process, 3D printing builds a three-dimensional object from computer-aided design (CAD) model or AMF file, and it usually successively add material chemicals layer by layer.

3D printing transforms the design ideas into real, especially ones with complex structure which is complicate to produce. Nowadays, the printing materials and equipment are two factors to limit the development of 3D printing technology. At present, the main 3D printing materials include engineering plastics, photosensitive resin, rubber materials, photosensitive materials, ceramic materials and metallic materials as follows.

Engineering plastics

They possess excellent strength, hardness, impact-resistance, and anti-aging property, such ABS, PC-like materials, PLA, nylon-like materials.

Photosensitive resin

A photopolymer or light-activated resin is a polymer that changes its properties when exposed to light. These changes are often manifested structurally, for example hardening of the material occurs as a result of cross-linking when exposed to light. In general, the photosensitive resin consists of polymer monomer and prepolymer. For example, somos NEXT, resin somos11122, somos19120 and epoxy resin.

Rubber materials

They possess a variety of levels of elasticity. The hardness, tear resistance and tensile strength of rubber make them ideal for applications requiring anti-skid or soft surfaces. The rubber products for 3D printing are mainly used for electronics, medical equipment and automotive interior, tires, gaskets and so on.

Ceramic materials

With high strength, high hardness, high temperature resistance, low density, chemical stability, corrosion resistance and other excellent features, ceramic materials have a wide range of applications in the fields of aerospace, automotive, biotechnology.

Metallic materials

The metal powder used in 3D printing generally require high purity, good sphericity, narrow particle size distribution and low oxygen content. At present, the metallic materials used in 3D printing are mainly titanium alloy, cobalt-chromium alloy, stainless steel and aluminum alloy materials.

“3D printing has revolutionized the manufacturing process and it is transforming the world now,” said Dr. Brenda Randy, the marketing manager of Alfa Chemistry. “Our offer will maximize the benefits of 3D printing throughout the product-development cycle for our customers.”
