Writer-Director Joshua Sinclair’s (‘Jump’, 'Judgment in Berlin’, ‘Shake Zulu’) biopic love story, ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ is a “moving and symbolic” (Sette), re-telling of history’s most compelling women in Judeo-Christian history, Edith Stein –the champion of feminism, Carmelite nun, German Jew and canonized saint. Recently screened for buyers at this year’s Cannes Marché Du Film with representation of ROCK SALT RELEASING, ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ showcases inspiring strength and independence behind Stein’s life, as well as her extraordinary, courageous quest for survival as fervid advocate for women’s rights despite caught in the midst of World War II’s extreme bloodshed, time of hatred and intense cruelty.
As the first and only Jewish patron saint of Europe, ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ displays Stein’s loyalty by unwilling to flee from Hitler’s death machine and instead, choosing the path to remain in Germany, united with “her people” as she courageously challenged the Nazi regime. Rooted in the exploration of a Judeo-Christian relationship, Stein’s story highlights the interdependence of different religions, as well as the necessity of having interfaith dialogues. Sinclair is able to preserve Stein’s life and legacy as “a character with a strong determination, whose days are punctuated by prayer, teaching, personal study and sweet everyday moments with her students” and beyond, “determines the salvation of a life and the hope for a new future,” glistened Sette.
Noted for its breathtaking cinematography by Italian legend and master of light Vittorio Storaro, who captures ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ in a “composing, visually striking” way, similar to his wonderful and extensive filmography, from ‘Apocalypse Now’ to ‘Last Tango in Paris’. As “a true scholar of the ‘meaning’ of colors”, Storaro signifies how “lights and colors assume an importance that goes well beyond the aesthetic aspect, inserting itself into the process to emphasize the emotions of the protagonists or the particular tone of a scene,” wrote Sette.
