Fort Worth Museum Displays Two Patriotic Paintings by Great American Artist Darius Cobb

Open House Event on Friday, July 6, from 2 pm to 4 pm., 242 Years After General George Washington Freed Boston

FORT WORTH, TX, June 27, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- DFW Elite Toy Museum is exhibiting two works by noted 19th and early 20th century painter Darius Cobb. The first depicts British soldiers and loyalists evacuating Boston via Boston Harbor on March 17, 1776, the final day of the British siege of Boston.

In a daring move, General Washington ordered cannons carried overland from Fort Ticonderoga and positioned in Dorchester Heights. Recognizing he had been out maneuvered, the British commander ordered an evacuation or British troops and loyalists from Boston. "Washington's bold stroke helped to resolve the siege and keep the cause of liberty alive," said Curator Rodney Ross.

The second work depicts the Battle of Bunker Hill perhaps most famous for Colonel William Prescott's command to his militiamen to "Hold your fire until you see the whites of their eyes."

The militiamen were low on ammunition. They had fortified Breed's Hill because it was closer to Boston than Bunker Hill. The June 17, 1775 battle was a pyrrhic victory for the British, who suffered heavy casualties before taking the hill. The redcoats saw that crushing the rebellion would not be easy.

The colonists were energized by their success in repulsing two British advances and by their ability to fight effectively against the leading army of the age. "The drama of the battle is captured by Cobb's beautiful 5-foot by 3-foot canvas," said Ron Sturgeon, proprietor of the non-profit toy museum. A photo of the artist painting the piece in the early 1900s, obtained from one of his descendants, will also be on display.

The Fort Worth toy museum will have a special viewing on Friday, July 6, 2018, from 2 pm to 4 pm. Come and see these great American patriotic paintings. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served. The museum is open weekdays from 9 am until 4 pm and Saturdays by appointment.

The current exhibition features dogs in art, toys, and antiques.
