Long-Time Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley Joins Mintz Levin and ML Strategies

Daniel F. Conley, the long-time District Attorney for Massachusetts’ Suffolk County, is joining Mintz Levin and its consulting subsidiary ML Strategies, expanding the firms’ deep bench of senior professionals with distinguished careers in public service.

Mr. Conley will serve as Special Counsel for Mintz Levin and a Senior Advisor for ML Strategies. He joins October 15, 2018. Mr. Conley has been Suffolk County’s District Attorney since 2002, overseeing an office of approximately 270 attorneys and staff who handle roughly 35,000 criminal cases annually. He previously served as a Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney.

“Mintz Levin and ML Strategies place enormous value on the dedication, experience and perspective that comes with public service and government leadership,” said R. Robert Popeo, Chairman of Mintz Levin. “As a top public prosecutor, Dan bolsters the multi-disciplinary capabilities our clients have come to expect, complementing an expanding team of powerhouse attorneys and government relations experts.”

In the Boston office alone, Mr. Conley joins Stephen Tocco, the former CEO of Massport who now serves as Chairman of ML Strategies, described by Boston Magazine as “the state’s most influential lobbying firm,” as well as former Governor Bill Weld and Brian Dempsey, the former State House Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means.

“After nearly 25 years in public service, I am thrilled to begin the next chapter of my career at Mintz Levin and ML Strategies, which enjoy tremendous reputations for excellence not only in Boston but across the country,” said Mr. Conley.

“During the course of his career, Dan has built deep relationships with the local business community and officials throughout the government. In his new role, Dan will leverage these relationships and his years of experience advising clients on government relations and litigation matters,” said Mr. Tocco. “Those who’ve worked with Dan attest to his legal skills, as well as leadership, integrity, focus and savvy – qualities that make him an outstanding addition to our team.”

During his four consecutive terms as Suffolk County District Attorney, Mr. Conley led a period of unprecedented reform and innovation within the office that included historic work to identify, correct, and prevent wrongful convictions; implementing the nation’s most transparent approach to fatal police shootings; drafting legislation to create the state’s Witness Protection Fund; and co-founding the Family Justice Center of Boston to streamline services to survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse. The smart-on-crime policies he adopted in and out of court dramatically reduced violent crime, incarceration, and new prosecutions simultaneously.

From 1994 to 2002, Mr. Conley served as a Boston City councilor and served as chairman of the Public Safety Committee. In addition to serving as an assistant district attorney earlier in his career, Mr. Conley was a trial attorney in the Boston office of one of the region’s prominent litigation firms. His practice focused on the defense of individuals and corporations in matters involving commercial liability, product liability, motor vehicle tort defense, workers compensation defense, and insurance fraud.
