Mayor Sylvester Turner of Houston to Deliver Remarks at 55th Latino Leaders Luncheon Series Event
HOUSTON - Sept. 17, 2018 - PRLog -- On Friday, September 21st the Latino Leaders Network (LLN), a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing leaders together, will convene its 55th Latino Leaders Luncheon Series event to honor award-winning Mexican-American journalist and author Alfredo Corchado with the Eagle Leadership Award from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Marriott Marquis Houston (1777 Walker Street, Houston, TX). Mayor Sylvester Turner of Houston will deliver special guest remarks. Senator Sylvia Garcia and Representative Carol Alvarado will also participate in the program.

As the Mexico, Border Correspondent of The Dallas Morning News, Corchado covers U.S. policy in Latin America and has worked for Dallas Morning News since 1994. He specializes in covering drug wars and the U.S.-Mexico border, writing stories on topics such as immigration, U.S.-Mexico relations, family separations along the border, the Wall, drug cartels, organized crime, corruption among police and government officials, and the spread of drug cartels into U.S. cities.

Howard Campbell, author of Drug War Zone, has called Corchado "the top American journalist covering Mexico today" whose "knowledge of the Mexican political system, the drug trade, and modern Mexican society is non-pareil." The Nieman Foundation for Journalism has noted that he has "described mass shootouts that no one else writes about and revealed how the few arrested for the mass murder of women in Juárez are often innocent stooges."

Corchado was born in Durango, Mexico as the oldest of eight children, and was raised in California and Texas. His dream of a career in journalism was largely based on the hopes of finding the roots of his homeland. Corchado's first book "Midnight in Mexico" was released in 2013 and his newest book "Homelands" was released in 2018.

"We honor Alfredo Corchado for his outstanding service to the Latino community," said Mickey Ibarra, Founder and Chairman of the Latino Leaders Network. "His personal story of obstacles overcome to achieve success inspires us to dream big and get ready to lead."

Henry Van de Putte, CEO of the American Red Cross, Texas Gulf Coast Region, will serve as the Community Partner. Sponsors include Anheuser-Busch, Waste Management, BP America, GEICO, H-E-B, The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Macy's, Chamberlain Hrdlicka, and Southwest Airlines.

Guests will receive a copy of Latino Leaders Speak: Personal Stories of Struggle and Triumph, compliments of H-E-B. The book is edited by Mickey Ibarra and features 33 keynote addresses delivered at the Latino Leaders Luncheon Series by leaders from a wide variety of occupations, including government, sports, entertainment, education, journalism and more.
