Award-Winning Apple Growth Partners Announces 10-Week Paid Maternity Leave

When the benefits outweigh the disadvantages, the decision is easy. This was the mindset of Chairman Chuck Mullen when proposing paid maternity and parental leave to the Apple Growth Partners’ (AGP) executive committee.

Apple Growth Partners announced the firm’s new paid maternity and parental leave policy to employees during the annual firm retreat in September, proving a commitment to their 100 professionals’ personal life balance. The firm’s executive committee approved a maternity and parental leave policy allowing eligible employees (after 12 months of employment) up to 10 weeks of paid leave, in addition to being a covered employer under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), for the birth, adoption, or placement in foster care of a child. Female employees who give birth to a child will be eligible for eight weeks of paid maternity leave and two weeks of paid parental leave, resulting in 10 weeks of paid leave without exhausting personal time off (PTO) or using saved sick days.

“When looking at the research and seeing that one in four of employed American women returns to work within two weeks of giving birth, the answer was clear to what we needed to do,” states Mullen. “We need to be a change agent in accounting firms, in Northeastern Ohio and in our country for providing employees paid maternity leave. We recognize this is a necessity for our professionals and the birth or adoption of a child needs to be celebrated with adequate paid time off.”

Caring for a newborn while experiencing the financial stress of not receiving a regular paycheck is an unwelcomed burden during what is meant to be the most magical time in a new parent’s life.

“We heard from employees who didn’t have paid leave with their former employers and their stories of trying to plan pregnancies after a certain amount of sick time was accrued just to be paid,” says Erin McCafferty, director of operations. “We want AGP professionals to have the flexibility to care for their family while thriving in their career.”

Celebrating their 75th year of helping grow local businesses through accounting and business advisory services, Apple Growth Partners is located in Akron with additional offices in Canton, Cleveland, and Kent. AGP offers a full range of services including tax planning and compliance, business valuation, litigation consulting and transactional advisory services.
