Luumi Aims to Remove 1 Million Plastic Bags from Circulation in Thailand

Over 60% of the world's ocean plastic comes from 5 countries, including Thailand. Luumi aims to remove 1 million plastic bags from circulation through a partnership with local monks.

VANCOUVER, BC, April 24, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As plastic accumulates in the world's oceans, Vancouver-based cause brand LUUMI is doubling down on its commitment to rid the world of plastic waste, and has partnered with Wat Phan On and IFLScience on it's mission to Unplastic The World.

The campaign, aimed at one of the world's largest sources of ocean bound plastics, gets underway this year on Earth Day, April 22, with a goal of removing 1 million plastic bags from circulation.

"Thailand is a major producer and consumer of single-use plastics and a major source of ocean-bound plastic waste," says Andrew Stromotich, Luumi co-founder and CEO, "and this is largely due to street food. Thailand has a vibrant, delicious street food culture that is a cornerstone of Thai life and any foreigner's travels in Thailand, and while I love it, the associated plastic waste is a massive problem that is having a global impact. LUUMI can help fix that."

On average, Thais use eight plastic bags per day per person, which amounts to a whopping 200 billion bags each year. To tackle this problem, Luumi will donate reusable oven, freezer, dishwasher and microwave safe pure platinum silicone bags that fold into bowls for every product purchased through luumi.com and ilovesciencestore.com between April 22 and May 22. Each product purchased from the Luumi collection will replace 100 plastic bags a year.

"Personal awareness and responsibility in reducing single use plastics is a great start, but this is a global problem with global impact, so focusing solely on ourselves as consumers and cleaning ourselves up isn't going to cut it. We're all collectively in this and Thailand needs our help," Stromotich says.

Luumi produces planet-friendly replacements for the most common forms of ocean bound plastic waste (lids, bags and straws), and only uses 100% pure platinum silicone. Platinum silicone is made from silica (sand) and is infinitely reusable and easily repurposed. It's free from bisphenols, PVC, phthalates and other toxic fillers. All Luumi products can be baked, boiled, frozen and refrigerated. They are also dishwasher safe. To learn more about the campaign and Luumi products, visit luumilife.com.
