Schneider Hammers joins forces with law firms to file against Smyrna Sterigenics Facility

SMYRNA, GA, September 05, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The attorneys at Schneider Hammers are joining forces with local law firms The Ashby Firm and Zinns Law, to file lawsuits against Sterigenics, its owner, and managers, for their negligent emission of ethylene oxide during the medical equipment sterilization process. This ethylene oxide exposure has caused abnormally high rates of cancer within the area surrounding the plant's location in Cobb County. Ethylene oxide (commonly referred to as EtO) greatly increases the risk of cancer in persons exposed to the carcinogen for an extended period of time.

Residents of Cobb County grew concerned about Sterigenics operations when a report was released last year that neighbors near the facility were unknowingly exposed to the toxic ethylene oxide chemical and urgently began fighting to stop plant emissions, even forming a group called "Stop Sterigenics Georgia".

Sterigenics temporarily stopped operations in August 2019 to install equipment that would allegedly reduce toxic emissions and was supposed to remain closed until a final review of their new equipment could take place. However, on March 25th, 2020, a court ruled to allow the facility to operate due to the COVID-19 outbreak to sterilize medical products. On April 1st, 2020, the court ruled that Sterigenics could remain operational until a final hearing takes place when courts are back in session.

After hearing the community's outcry, Schneider Hammers, The Ashby Firm, and Zinns Law joined forces to hold Sterigenics accountable and put an end to Sterigenics' operations. These lawyers are dedicated to fighting on behalf of Cobb County residents for their health and safety.
