What’s a summer get-together without sweet, delicious watermelon? Of course, slicing that melon up into usable pieces can be a struggle. In this post, we’ll explain how to cut a watermelon into cubes without any struggle or fuss (we can’t promise there won’t be any mess, though!).

The Joy of Sweet Summer Watermelon

For many of us, watermelon’s sweet, delicious flavor and aroma link directly to childhood memories. The sun was hot on our shoulders, we had cold watermelon right from the fridge in our hands, and we had huge smiles on our faces.

But many of us don’t bother with it now that we’re adults. Why? Because cutting it up isn’t easy.

Stop right there. Cutting watermelon is one of the simplest things in the world, as long as you have the right melon knife and know the correct technique.

Let’s start by talking about your watermelon knife.

The Right Melon Knife

What’s your go-to tool when it comes to slicing melons? Chances are good that it’s a chef’s knife. Or maybe you lean toward a bread knife since it at least has a serrated blade.

Both are logical choices. Both are ultimately wrong.

What you need is a knife specifically designed for cutting melons. The amount of flesh, the suction created by fluid within the melon, and the sheer size of most watermelons mean that you need a specialty tool.

The GoodCook Everyday Melon Knife is a good example of this type of tool. The blade measures nine inches, so you can easily tackle even the largest melons. It’s also not a solid blade. You’ll notice cutouts to help relieve fluid pressure and keep the blade from getting stuck in place due to suction.

The serrated teeth on the blade make cutting through even the toughest rind a cinch, and the ergonomically designed handle always ensures a confident grip. Plus, it comes with a sheathe, so you can store it without worrying about cutting yourself when pulling something out of the drawer.

Now that you have the right cutting tool let’s talk technique. The way you cut a watermelon matters a lot. Believe it or not, there is a right way to go about it. We’ve broken it down into steps below.

  1. Rinse

First, clean your melon. That will prevent getting dirt from the outside rind into the meat of the melon while you’re slicing. Dry it when you’re done.

  1. Cut It in Half Width Wise

Cut the melon into two equal, circular pieces by slicing it across the middle.

  1. Remove the Stem End

Next, use your watermelon knife to cut off the stem end of the melon.

  1. Place Both Halves Cut Side Down

Flip both halves of the melon to lie face-down on your cutting board.

  1. Remove the Rind

Hold your watermelon knife at an angle and cut toward the cutting board to slice off as much of the rind as possible. Continue this process until all the rind and white have been removed.

  1. Slice It Up

Now cut each half into thirds. You should end up with three circular pieces from each half. Next, go ahead and cut each circle into sticks, and then cut those sticks into cubes using a grid pattern. Repeat this process for each piece.

  1. Chill

Place your cubed watermelon in the fridge to chill, and eat the pieces at your leisure!

Proper Storage Technique

Now that you know how to cut a watermelon into cubes, ensure you’ve got your storage technique down. While a whole watermelon will last in your fridge for up to two weeks (uncut), cubes are a different story.

Store your cubes in an airtight storage container for up to four days. You can also freeze them, and they’ll last up to three months, but this does change their texture.

A Sweet, Sweet Summer

With the right technique and tools, enjoying delicious, fresh watermelon all summer is easier than ever. Want more watermelon-slicing techniques? Check out our video – 5 Easy Ways to Cut a Watermelon.
