Record Shipment of Australian Wagyu Cattle to Gulf Markets Signals Growing Demand
Shipment of 222 Wagyu cattle from Melbourne Avalon Airport marks the largest Wagyu livestock air export from Australia to date.

SYDNEY, Australia - A shipment of 222 Wagyu-grade cattle exported from Melbourne Avalon Airport to the Gulf in early February marked the largest Wagyu livestock air export from Australia to date, highlighting rising international demand for premium beef genetics.

The cattle were supplied and exported by Australia’s Livestock Exporters (ALE) and transported via dedicated cargo aircraft using specialised livestock crates designed to maintain animal welfare and minimise travel stress.

The shipment was destined for breeding and beef production programs in the Middle East, where demand for premium Wagyu beef has expanded alongside growth in the region’s hospitality sector and broader investment in food security.

“Australian Wagyu genetics are increasingly sought after across Gulf markets as producers invest in premium beef production and food security initiatives,” said a spokesperson for Australia’s Livestock Exporters (ALE).

Australia’s Livestock Exporters, an Australian-based company specialising in supplying breeding cattle to international markets, coordinated the operation with aviation logistics partners at Melbourne Avalon Airport.

Australia has developed one of the largest Wagyu industries outside Japan, combining traditional Japanese bloodlines with modern breeding programs and commercial beef production systems.

Wagyu beef is globally recognised for its high marbling, tenderness and flavour, making it one of the most sought-after premium beef products in international markets.

Demand for Wagyu genetics has increased significantly across the Middle East in recent years, with countries including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia investing in livestock imports to strengthen domestic food production.

High-value breeding cattle are often transported via air freight to reduce transit times and maintain animal welfare standards during international shipments.

Industry observers say the operation highlights both the growing importance of premium beef markets and the role of specialised logistics in supporting global livestock trade.
