British Swim School Franchisee to be Featured Speaker at National Water Safety Conference

ST LOUIS, MO / ACCESSWIRE / February 1, 2023 / Birch McMullin, owner of British Swim School of St. Louis, will be a featured speaker at the 2023 National Water Safety Conference, hosted by the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) on February 13 at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs.

McMullin will be part of a special panel discussion titled "The Legacy of Drowning," which will focus on the long-term impact of fatal drownings on the surviving siblings.

Every year in the United States, there are an estimated 4,000 fatal unintentional drownings, according to the CDC. That is an average of 11 drowning deaths per day. For every one of those lives lost, there are countless family members whose lives are forever impacted by the tragedy. When the victim is a child, much of the sympathetic focus goes to the parents. But what about the surviving siblings?

The "Legacy of Drowning" panel will shed light on their stories and experiences that are often overshadowed.

"I lost my brother Nicholas to drowning when I was 5. He was 22 months old. His death impacted choices I made throughout my life, including the decision to leave my law practice to open a British Swim School franchise and increase my commitment to drowning prevention," says Birch McMullin, owner of British Swim School of St. Louis. "I also sit on the board of the SWIM ON Foundation, created by my parents in Nicholas' memory to help promote water safety, with a focus on education and awareness."

McMullin will be joined on the panel by his siblings, including Christopher McMullin, who is a therapist in private practice, and Katherine Jones, a pediatrician at St. Louis Children's Hospital. Other panelists include:

Hallie Baker - Now a pediatric nurse in Boston, Hallie lost her sister Graeme in a tragic hot tub incident. Graeme, who was just 7 years old, died after being trapped underwater by the powerful suction from the hot tub's drain. Her family was the driving force behind the Virginia Graeme Baker Act, which requires special anti-entrapment drain covers to prevent similar deaths.

Grace Taylor - She is the sister of Abbey Taylor who also died of injuries from a drain entrapment when she was just 6 years old. Her family started Abbey's Hope, a water safety foundation, in Minneapolis.

The event will be moderated by Alan Korn, the General Counsel for the NDPA. He is also the Executive Director of Abbey's Hope Charitable Foundation and served as the main lobbyist on the Virginia Graeme Baker act.

British Swim School, the nation's leading "learn to swim" franchise company, will also be a featured exhibitor during the conference. British Swim School is the first and only franchise swim school to partner with the NDPA in its mission to further education about drowning and aquatic injuries, further underscoring their commitment to their mantra, "Survival of the Littlest".

Since its inception in 1981, British Swim School has expanded to over 250 franchise locations across the U.S and Canada.

Research shows that participation in formal swim programs, such as those offered by British Swim School, can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children who are most at risk for accidental death by drowning.
