Dr. Kriegel completed a bachelor's degree in psychology at Ohio State University in 1977, followed by a master's degree in clinical psychology from Western Carolina University in 1979. Complementing his formal education, Dr. Kriegel completed specialized training to become board-certified in pain management and counseling psychology.

Dr. Kriegel founded Kriegel Consulting in 1992, which provided him with a wealth of experience in the industry. He leveraged his knowledge to establish Kriegel & Associates in 2000, which he has operated ever since.

Dr. Kriegel points out that the health care industry is increasingly recognizing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to pain management. His work includes sixteen articles in medical journals, three book chapters and a medical book, providing participants with practical insights and evidence-based strategies. He presents on his findings to transform clinical practices on a global scale.

Building a Team That Sets New Standards

By creating and developing IPM treatment centers around the country, Dr. Kriegel has built a robust team of physicians, psychologists, physical therapists and other health care providers aiming to reestablish the field. Supported by these experts, he has built relationships with payer sources to improve patient care. Furthermore, Dr. Kriegel's work to revitalize IPM has strengthened standards of the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for pain centers. Now, such facilities must meet certain requirements to become CARF accredited, ensuring quality care for patients.

Moving forward, Dr. Kriegel aims to continue advocating for IPM treatment over opioid-based pain treatment. As part of these efforts, he is developing a continuing medical education course for all disciplines in an IPM program on non-opioid treatment of pain, with an end goal of being funded by each U.S. state's opioid advisory board. Dr. Kriegel is determined to return IPM to the gold standard of pain treatment.
