PhytoLove Submits TGA Application for Novel Ingredient in Australia

A solution to the devastating impact of fishing?

Camilla Brinkworth and Simah Acabani have joined forces to submit a TGA application to provide an answer to the Australian and New Zealand markets to fish consumption’s devastating impacts to the Earth.

The health of the oceans is fundamental to the Earth’s ecology and the survival of all species, including humans. Earth's oceans absorb between 25-40% of CO2 emissions and produce a staggering 50-80% of Earth’s oxygen.

The impact of fishing is so detrimental to ocean ecology that it is considered a leading driver of climate change. Each year, an estimated 0.8 to 2.3 trillion fish are taken from the oceans for food. A lesser acknowledged 650,000 dolphins, whales, seals, turtles and sea lions are also killed either intentionally or as collateral damage in the exploit of commercialised fish.

The ecology of the ocean is extremely sensitive, with a food chain that when disrupted by such significant human intervention, leads to a collapse of many species. Around 90% of global marine stocks are now considered fully exploited, overexploited, or depleted. Some experts estimate that by 2048 virtually empty oceans are expected.

Concerningly, bottom trawling produces more CO2 than the entire aviation industry, create dead zones, and detrimental algae blooms. Whilst there is great social awareness regarding plastic straws impact on the oceans, their impact pales in significance compared to fishing gear. The infamous Great Pacific Garbage Patch consists of 46% fishing nets, in contrast to 0.03% from plastic straws.

Fish farming is also largely unsustainable, with the calculated 1.2kg of feed required to produce 1kg of farmed salmon, actually being composed of dried fish meal and processed fish oil- thereby camouflaging the true weight of fish required to produce it. Even the lowest-impact fish farms also contributes more greatly to emissions than plant-based proteins.

PhytoLove envisages a future where the oceans, and all the life contained within them, are treated with the respect that they deserve.
