The restaurant has been awarded the prestigious Annapurna Certificate for its exceptional service to customers, as it commits to delivering authentic Indian cuisine in Oslo.
-- New Delhi Restaurant, a leading Indian restaurant in Oslo, has been awarded the prestigious Annapurna Certificate by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to recognize culinary excellence and cultural contribution abroad.
Known as the best Indian restaurant in Oslo, New Delhi is now among a select group of global restaurants recognized for their cultural contribution and outstanding hospitality.
Often referred to as India’s version of the Michelin Star, the Annapurna Certificate is granted to a select group of Indian restaurants outside India that demonstrate an unwavering commitment to authenticity, hospitality, and culinary quality.
For New Delhi Restaurant, this award confirms its status as one of the best Indian restaurants in Oslo, while also celebrating over four decades of dedication to sharing Indian flavors and culture with the Norwegian community.
The award was presented to Baljit Singh Padda, owner of New Delhi Restaurant, during a formal ceremony in New Delhi on April 9, 2025. The selection process was rigorous, involving recommendations from Indian embassies abroad and evaluations by expert juries appointed by the ICCR. New Delhi Restaurant is one of the first Indian restaurants in Oslo, and in Scandinavia, to receive this rare honor.
Baljit Singh Padda states, “My father was Norway’s first Indian chef back in 1982. It has been 42 years since we have collectively shared the rich culture of India through food with Norway, so in a way, this certificate belongs to all members of our team of 70 people.”
A Legacy of Indian Flavors
Founded in 1982 by Padda’s father, New Delhi Restaurant was among the first Indian restaurants to open in Oslo. From the beginning, it has been serving as a cultural meeting point by bringing together Norwegians, Indian immigrants, and travelers through a shared love of food.
The restaurant is known for its signature dishes like Tandoori Halibut, Rogan Josh, and Butter Chicken, which are carefully crafted using traditional North Indian recipes, often enhanced with local Norwegian produce.
The restaurant serves over 5,000 guests each month and continues to grow in popularity due to its consistent quality, warm service, and inviting ambiance. Its interiors are a blend of Indian artistry and Scandinavian minimalism, offering a modern yet culturally rooted dining experience.
From sourcing seasonal and local ingredients to minimizing kitchen waste, the restaurant has taken significant steps to align with both Indian culinary traditions and modern environmental standards. Thus, the ICCR recognizes the contribution of Indian restaurants abroad to integrating Indian culture with the communities they serve.
New Delhi Restaurant’s Vision
To celebrate the award and share its culinary philosophy with a wider audience, New Delhi Restaurant is launching a limited-time menu called the “Annapurna Tasting Journey.” Starting May 1, 2025, this new tasting menu will take guests on a regional tour of India’s rich culinary landscape, combining beloved classics with new dishes that showcase Nordic ingredients.
The restaurant also plans to host a celebratory event in June, where representatives of the Indian Embassy in Norway and local dignitaries will be invited to mark the occasion.
This achievement comes at a time when the demand for high-quality international cuisine in Oslo is at an all-time high. The city's multicultural population and increasing interest in global food experiences make it a vibrant setting for diverse culinary businesses.
By receiving the Annapurna Certificate, New Delhi Restaurant has raised its own profile and has set a new benchmark for other Indian restaurants in Oslo. This serves as a reminder of what’s possible when food, culture, and community come together with purpose.
As Oslo continues to welcome global influences, the story of New Delhi Restaurant stands to show how traditional roots grow into international recognition.
