The Home Office has made itself a prominent place in our home in the last couple years as many of us took to working from home during the pandemic. Along with the kitchen and garage, did you know the home office is considered one of the “most difficult rooms to pack”? Important documents, computer monitors, small equipment, cords, furniture, where do you start? No worries, we are here to help!

Here are our home office packing tips below:

  1. Have the right supplies

A home office can be difficult to pack because of the many essential and valuable items. However, buying packing items in advance can guarantee that your documents, office equipment, and office furniture are suitably safeguarded throughout the move. To pack up your home office, you’ll need the following items:

  • Strong cardboard boxes or plastic tote boxes

Have as many sizes as possible. You’ll find electronics are a bit tricky to pack as they’re not square and stackable. If possible, pack your electrical items in their original packaging for the move. This will ensure that they will be safe and secure while in transit.

  • Bubble Wrap

Utilize protective packaging materials if you don’t have the original boxes. Bubbles packed with air protect delicate items during transport as they serve as soft cushions.

  • Packing Paper

Crumpled paper acts as a great barrier between your items and extra protections

  • Ziplock bags

Have small bags in handy for little things like screws, cords, tools. For example, If you take apart a desk, place the screws into the bag and use painters tip to attach to the desk so they don’t get lost in the mix of everything and it’s there for you when it’s time to reassemble

  1. Organize your files and documents

Packing for a move is the best time to get organized because you don’t want to take junk and unnecessary times into your new home. Here are some tips for organizing your files and documents:

  • Do away with unused papers, don’t spend time reorganizing your files by moving and repacking outdated and unnecessary documents
  • Shred and discard any non-essential papers containing private information
  • Filing boxes are an excellent place to keep all necessary papers once classified into accordion-style folders. If you do not have these on hand, store your papers into regular copy paper boxes
  1. Properly label all of your boxes

Label your boxes as “office” so you know where that particular box will go. Tape the boxes shut and write a short explanation of its contents on the label.

  1. Move your home office documents by yourself

Suppose you’ve hired a moving company to help you relocate. You should keep all of your important documents, personal documents with you during your move so you know where they are at all times and they are easily accessible in case you need them during your move.

  1. Packing electronics?

There will be an abundance of wires and cables for each electronic device that needs to be accounted for when moving your home office. Before the relocation, three things you should do are essential for avoiding post-move cable hassles:

  • Take a photo of your cord setup which will help you when re-connecting your equipment or as a reference if you have movers setting up your home office
  • You can also use labels on your cords to distinguish where they need to be placed
  • Zip ties can also help bundle together your cables to be identified more quickly after completing the move.

Following these tips will help you make your office move simpler. If you’re overwhelmed with your move or packing, don’t hesitate to contact us! We are always happy to help.
