Glow Necklaces - everything you need to know

By: PRLog
PR Log - Apr 18, 2012 - If you are looking for an innovative way to create some street lighting for a party, or even just to brighten up the inside of your gazebo this summer as the evening gets on, then glow necklaces present the perfect solution.

Originally created for military use as an emergency lighting source, the glow stick is a familiar sight in pubs and clubs as well as children’s parties and large scale concerts.

Glow necklaces and bracelets are also a superb way to keep your children visible on dark nights.  You might also want to use them yourself as a safety feature for when you are walking the dog – it might even be helpful to have Fido wear one around his neck too so he can be seen by drivers.

Glow sticks are made by mixing two liquids (alcohol and hydrogen peroxide).  The liquids are kept apart by a thin glass capsule which causes a reaction once the glass is broken.  It is easy to activate the glow necklaces by accident – a simple shake can break the glass membrane separating the liquids.  However, by simply bending the glow stick, you will cause the two liquids inside to mingle, causing a fluorescent glow known as chemiluminescence.  Give the stick a quick shake and in warm weather conditions, the glow should last for a substantial eight-hour period.  Under cooler conditions, the glow may be barely noticeable but could last a few weeks.

You can then join up the ends to create a necklace, or join two or three of the glow sticks together to create an individual style.  You could make a garland of the glow sticks for your garden party, or create a highly original centrepiece for your al fresco dinner party.
