Dr Krishna Saksena's book My Joys and Sorrows – as a Mother of a Special Child will be available in bookstores and online platforms

New Delhi, Delhi Jun 20, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - The Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare today launched My Joys and Sorrows - as a Mother of a Special Child, a book written by the widely published author Dr. Krishna Saksena.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that he feels lucky to read this crisp book. He was inspired by the simple language used by Dr. Saksena.

He said that the way he worked very hard towards the eradication of  Polio thru Vaccination. Similarly, Covid 19 would also end soon thru the vaccination of all Indians. This book is the epitome of the bravery and endurance of a mother, in the best tradition of Indian motherhood.  Like to the country, we must pay our respects to such a mother.  Not just mothers, I expect fathers to read this book to learn about parenting a child and parenting a generation."

My Joys and Sorrows as a Mother of a Special Child (Ocean Books, Delhi, 2021) is a heart-warming and yet heart-rending book that is difficult to read because it inevitably makes you cry.  And yet it must be read because it shows the heroism and sacrifices of an Indian mother and makes us realise that so-called normal life is not to be taken for granted.  It is a learning and a spiritual experience reading the book. It shows the power of pure love and faith.  The book is written in a conversational and easy-going style, making us feel like participants in the author's life journey.

Dr. Krishna Saksena has been a teacher by vocation.  While teaching in a Delhi University college, she must have engaged with hundreds of so-called normal young people, even as she, in her own life, redefined what normal can mean for a mother.  She writes the book as an autobiography, both her own and her differently-abled son Shiv, who could not write his own story.

The chapters of the book follow the chronology of her son's life which is also her own life.  It begins from the moment when the family first realizes that Shiv is not like any other child.  Life changes for good, for everybody, but most of all for the mother.  Shiv's growing up story is also the story of the author's evolution into an amazingly patient, spiritual, and generous person.

What is most poignant in the author's writing is the detailing of everyday life, small events, and little mercies that make up the existence of the inseparable mother-son duo.  The mother is never lonely, though one would have imagined she would have been because no one really could have experienced as intimately the nuances of mothering an entirely dependent child.  She appears to be grateful to everybody else - she dedicates the book to the sweetness of her bhabi who was a friend and confidant until she passed away recently.

And most amazingly, she kept up her humour in a way only a mother can when she enjoys her child, whoever the child may be.  Hear her laughing, when the son would head butt strangers, instead of feeling embarrassed.  She writes: "Shiv would run after me wherever I went.  Speaking in his own funny way, jumping, dancing, he would make himself a laughing stock.  With him, they would start hating me. ...Sitting alone, my tears would flow, little Shiv would run to wipe my tears with his shirt."

On the journey of writing the book, Dr. Krishna Saksena recalls "I had never imagined I could have written of my life with Shiv.  It felt too much my own, my most intimate experiences.  But with age, I realized that it is also my responsibility to give voice to a child who has no voice of his own.  And his voice is so entangled with my own that this book could not have been but an autobiography of two selves as one".

Dr. Krishna Saksena emotionally said that at this Juncture of her life she is very much satisfied with the way she has been able to nurture her son Shiv. It was a tough uphill journey as she had to leave all her parties and social gatherings but Shiv became her topmost priority. She feels gratitude towards God for giving her strength to look after shiv and she has no regret for Shiv being a special child. She is the happiest mother.

The book is full of beautiful photographs, including some black and white ones which have historical significance, not only because some of them feature public personalities but also because it chronicles the domestic as well as the professional context of the times.

The Publisher said that it was proud to publish and distribute such a book because this is a book that would make anybody pause and relearn how to live one's own life.  It is a book with immense emotional power and public significance.

Dr. Saksena was the first woman to get a Ph.D. degree from Lucknow University in 1955.
