The whole point of scalp micropigmentation treatment is to achieve a natural, realistic look of hair follicles. Many different factors go into the technique to ensure this is achieved. A critical factor for achieving the right look for scalp micropigmentation is having multiple sessions, around 2 to 4 to be precise. This article will discuss why we need more than one session and all the aspects that go into these sessions to achieve the perfect scalp micropigmentation. Firstly, let’s go through the process.

Consultation

To start, you will have a consultation, this is highly recommended here in the uk by Scalp Kings and in New Jersey by Scalp Micro NJ. This is so the artist can see the extent of your hair loss and how they can help you achieve your desired look. The treatment could be a full head of replicated follicles, density treatment or scar or alopecia camouflage. If you need your hairline restored, we will consider your hairline preference and discuss which better suits you. Lastly, we will book you in for your first scalp micropigmentation session.

First Session

The first session usually lasts longer than any other session. Depending on the extent of treatment you require depends on how the session starts and how long it will take. If you are getting your hairline restored, we will draw this on before we start the procedure. Pigment colour is significant when it comes to scalp micropigmentation treatments. It is a carbon-based pigment diluted with distilled water to get the right shade to match your hair colour and skin tone. The more water in the pigment, the lighter the pigment will appear in the skin. Once the colour is prepared and all essential health and safety procedures are in place, the procedure can begin. A numbing ointment is applied to ensure you experience as little discomfort as possible. Pigment is implanted into the skin’s upper dermal layer using microneedles attached to a particular handheld machine. With your first visit, you will be leaving with a layout for your following sessions.

Second Session

During this session, your hairline will officially be created. Blending fresh microdots with the dots from the first session will give you a realistic-looking hairline. We will then add density to the scalp by adding more layers of pigment. The pigment is usually slightly darker than the original session, creating a more in-depth, 3-D look. This session will not take anywhere near the amount of time the first one did.

Third Session or more

The last few touches are made to ensure you walk out with your completed scalp micropigmentation look in the final sessions. These should not take any longer than around 30 minutes.

Why do I need multiple sessions?

When getting scalp micropigmentation treatment, several things need to be considered to ensure the best results, these are:

  • Fading – No entire scalp micropigmentation treatment should ever be done in just one session. Many scalps lose up to 20% of the microdots between the first and second session. Everyone is different, which also means everyone’s skin is different. Scalp micropigmentation artists are never 100% sure how your skin will assimilate the pigment. We will find out when you return for the second session.

  • Inflammation – If scalp micropigmentation treatment is done in one session, the microdots will become overcrowded and cause severe inflammation. Doing too much at once gives the artist limited visibility, making it difficult to see whether the microdots are in the correct place; this can be very painful for you.

  • Tone adjustment – We make the pigment progressively darker from session to session. The light to dark creates a textured effect on the scalp, giving you a 3-D look which is a big part of making the scalp micropigmentation look natural and realistic.

  • Healing time – Aftercare and healing are an essential part of scalp micropigmentation treatment. If the aftercare is not followed correctly, the healing process will not be correct, and this can cause premature fading. Pigment shedding is a normal part of the process. The scalp is healing and exfoliating. During the healing process, the scalp forms scabs where the skin has been penetrated; these scabs will make the microdots appear a lot larger than they are. Once the scabs heal, the pigment will appear a lot lighter than you may have anticipated. This is yet another reason why more than one session is required. Scalp micropigmentation is designed to be permanent, but fading is inevitable due to the pigment used and the layer of skin the pigment is implanted into, which contribute to the appearance of the treatment.

  • Blending – is a crucial part of scalp micropigmentation treatment. We achieve the most natural look possible by blending the pigments with your natural hair growth and hair pattern. This is done gradually over multiple sessions to ensure it looks realistic.

So, in order to achieve a natural-looking scalp of replicated follicles, you need to have multiple sessions over a relatively short period of time as you need at least 10 to 20 days between sessions to let your scalp heal and the pigment settle. The amount of sessions needed is specific to each individual.
