Experts Push for Better Testing as Portugal Makes 1st Sustainably Fuelled Flight

Egham,United Kingdom - August 22, 2022 /PressCable/

As an industry-leading and world-recognised fuel testing company, Conidia Bioscience brings FUELSTAT® into action to make microbial contamination testing in aviation fuel faster and more dependable.

With a drive to Net Zero goals and a more sustainable future, the airline sector is casting about for more innovative fuel solutions, like SAF (sustainable aviation fuel). And in line with this target of reducing anthropogenic emission of carbon dioxide by 45% by 2030, Portugal’s main airline, TAP, recently completed its first flight using SAF, a fuel blend with 39% SAF produced from refined oils and bio-based waste.

SAF is a cleaner alternative to conventional fossil-based jet fuel, attaining up to 80% reduction in GHG emissions over the fuel’s lifecycle compared to fossil fuel. And with the aviation industry being more inclined toward biofuels, the importance of microbial fuel testing intensifies to avoid fuel wastage and boost fuel efficiency.

Though biofuels are more environmentally friendly, the reduction in sulphur and the introduction of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) in jet fuel prompt the growth of microbes.

Microbial contamination can occur in the fuel tank, supply chain, or during business, commercial, or general aviation operations and lead to fuel level gauge malfunctions, fuel filter clogging, corrosion to the tank structure, or even entire engine disruption.

Conidia aims to offer immunoassay antibody testing for SAF and blended SAF and help detect microbes growing in the fuel, trace unwanted residues, confirm aviation fuel safety, and more.

The company claims its Immunoassay Antibody Technology-powered fuel testing kit, FUELSTAT®, is a high-end microbe detection system that can be done on-site on the spot. It requires no heavy equipment, and provides accurate results in just 15 minutes in an easy-to-interpret format. It means the fuel being tested does not need to be transported to a lab, minimising delays and chances for cross-contamination.

In addition, Conidia Bioscience claims that because FUELSTAT® works based on fuel samples and a ‘test-at-the-tank’ process, it enables aviation businesses to conform to and efficiently evade the issues of complying with the regulations in ASTM D6469 Section 8.5 related to fuel management, transportation and time constraints on testing.

In addition, Conidia experts mark the efficacy of FUELSTAT® in minimising the potential risk of microbiological contamination in jet fuel. It not only identifies microbial growth at the earliest stages and before severe safety/operational issues occur, but it also monitors trends, thereby limiting fuel wastage.

Founded in 2000, Conidia Bioscience is an industry-recognised company specialising in developing, manufacturing, and supplying fuel testing kits for accurately detecting microbiological contamination in aviation, marine, military, and transportation fuel systems. The company delivers more than 100,000 test kits every year and comes with ASTM D8070 compliant FUELSTAT® Plus, which leads the field in the aviation sector.
