Workers Seek Job Security, Respect On The Job, Fair Wages
WASHINGTON, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dispatchers at Atlas Air and Polar Air Cargo have voted overwhelmingly to join Teamsters Local 210 in New York City, joining flight crewmembers who voted by a 2-1 margin late last year to join the union.
The dispatchers voted unanimously to join Local 210. The workers cast ballots between January 12 and today. The election was coordinated by the National Mediation Board (NMB). The dispatchers filed an application with the NMB to join the Teamsters on Nov. 19. The dispatchers, who number 30, had not been represented by a labor union.
"We welcome the dispatchers to Local 210," said George Miranda, Local 210's Secretary-Treasurer. "We will work hard to negotiate a contract that addresses their concerns: job security, respect on the job and scheduling so that they have a better idea of their work shifts."
Workers also are seeking fair wages, improved medical benefits and recognition from the company for the important job they perform.
"The dispatchers now join nearly 900 Atlas Air and Polar Air Cargo flight crewmembers who voted to join the Teamsters in December," said Capt. David Bourne, director of the Teamsters Airline Division. "We look forward to providing all the new members top-notch Teamster representation so that they have brighter futures for themselves and for their families."
The two air carriers are the operating entities for Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings (Nasdaq: AAWW), which is based in Purchase, N.Y. Atlas is the world's largest Boeing 747 cargo carrier.
The Teamsters Airline Division, under the direction of Bourne, represents 43,000 airline employees.
Founded in 1903, the Teamsters Union represents more than 1.4 million hardworking men and women in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
